Particle-, Astroparticle-, Hadron- & Nuclei- Physics Accelerate the NFDI

This site is deprecated

PAHN-PaN was a consortitium of the first NFDI call in 2019. However the proposal was not successful. The PAHN-PaN effort was merged with the Astro@NFDI consortium to the PUNCH consortium that has been finally successful in the second round of NFDI calls.

About PAHN-PaN

PAHN-PaN - "Particle, Astroparticle, Hadron and Nuclear Physics accelerate the NFDI" - is a consortium for the Nationale Forschungsdaten-Infrastruktur NFDI of the DFG. It has more than twenty partners (co-applicants and participants) from three domains, particle physics, astro-particle physics and hadron & nuclear physics.

Summary of the proposal

The PAHN-PaN communities have always been at the forefront of technological developments.
Today, due to the development of new accelerators, new observatories and experiments, and
new detectors with increased resolutions and higher event rates, our physics is experiencing a
rapid increase of data rates and volumes and also a more diverse access sharing. This boost of
data leads to ever increasing demands on data analysis power and methods, and on data man-
agement capabilities. The goal of the PAHN-PaN Consortium is to develop solutions for the data
challenges and to help setting up the structures necessary for this endeavour. These structures
will facilitate the exploitation of synergies within the consortium, easy transfer of knowledge and
technology to and from neighbouring consortia and communities, and the establishing of relevant
services for PAHN-PaN and the entire NFDI. These goals are pursued in dedicated task
areas and cross-cutting topics:

Task area 1 ”Developing workflows and tools for data management” addresses the devel-
opment of work flows and tools and their and technical integration. The required infrastructure
will be developed towards industry standards to allow shared usage with other scientific dis-
ciplines and cost-effective operations. Task area 2 ”FAIR data lifecycle concepts and open
data” will develop a concept of research data management for the entire PAHN-PaN research
field that equally meets the requirements of other research fields. The projects of task area 3
”Data analysis procedures and services” maximise the scientific value of data by providing
high-level services and tools for data analysis. Task area 4 ”Real-time data analysis and
selection” addresses the technically necessary data reduction in the course of the acquisition
and early processing of data including the question of real-time data selection with minimal
loss of information.

One aim of the NFDI is to create synergies between different fields of science, and with
cross-cutting topic A ”Synergies” we will contribute to this effort by developing projects with
other consortia, and by explicitly looking for new ideas to be exploited in the future. The effort of
cross-cutting topic B ”Services” is more concretely aimed at identifying and delivering services
for PAHN-PaN and, ultimately, also for other consortia. The goal is the development of generic
services that can address a broad spectrum of needs from multiple communities. In cross-
cutting topic C ”Professional training, education, outreach”, the focus is on teaching students
and early-career researches in PAHN-PaN-relevant topics, mentoring them, and disseminating
concepts, tools and results to the general public.
